After the "Computer scan", the "Scan Finished" window gave these Scan Results:ĭetected risks 5 Treated 5 Successful 1 Failed 4. Just before the start of the Computer scan, Avira said it was checking the computer's "hard drive", but as stated in item 3 above, I believe it scanned the SSD.ĥ. The computer's internal hard disk is connected but rarely accsessed. My iMac uses an external SSD as the Startup Disk. They should be stated explicitly by Avira before a scan is started, during the scan, and in the Scan Finished window.Ĥ. Avira joined AV-Comparatives’ Main Test Series at the very beginning, in 2004. The company produces software for home users and businesses, covering Windows, Mac OS, iOS and Android platforms. It should not require detective work for the user to determine what devices and folders will be scanned. Avira was Founded in 1986, and has its headquarters in Tettnang, Germany. By noting what items are listed in the "Custom scan" option, I finally learned (I think) that Avira's "Computer scan" would scan Users/MyAccount/Documents on the boot-up device. I haven't yet succeeded in finding out what is scanned during "Quick scan". Neither does the "Scan Finished" window reveal this information. The "Avira Help" item in the menubar "Help" column doesn't tell how to find out what devices and folders will be scanned. The Settings option doesn't allow any choice of which devices and folders to scan. Nowhere in the app or on your website could I discover which folders of which storage device(s) would be scanned during a "Quick scan" or a "Computer scan". Why did it not reveal the "Help" column in the menubar until after the first scan was complete?ģ. Since Avira was able to run a scan, presumably it was fully installed. However, after the scan Avira did show it. During an overnight Computer scan with the second-installed Avira app, there was no menubar "Help" column showing. Did the error on the first installation occur because I had moved the Avira app to a subfolder of Applications? If so, you should warn users against moving the Avira app.Ģ. (I didn't know at this time that there was an Uninstall command available in Avira because there was no "Help" column, as detailed in item 2 below.)Īfter the second installation I left Avira where the installer put it and was able to run a Quick Scan and a Computer Scan.

I suspected that my drag of the Avira app was the cause of the error, so I trashed the app, then repeated opening the dmg file to re-install Avira. When I tried to run Avira, it quit immediately with an error message that I don't remember. I created a new subfolder within my Applications folder for Avira-related files and dragged the dmg file and Avira app into it. Here are some questions that came up with my computer and a few suggestions that might be helpful for new users of Avira.ġ.
